Walt Disney World Snacks

Walt Disney World Snacks – December 2019

Now Walt Disney World Snacks are something that I take very seriously. Disney has, in recent years, really stepped up their snack game. Making things that they know will taste good but also will make people want to photograph and share them. This truly is something Disney is thinking about – is this snack ‘Instagram-able’? This trip was during the festive season so there is a definite theme in the snacks we tried. A snack in Disney terms is anything from a bottle of water through to an ice cream sundae. I will mention if you can or cannot use a Disney dining plan snack credit for each snack listed. We were not using a dining plan this time but have in the past.

The first snack we picked up was a Peppermint Churro. This is traditional fried dough with a crisp outside and a soft interior that has been sprinkled in a peppermint sugar. The peppermint flavour was there – just. It was definitely a subtle flavour; personally I would have liked more of the peppermint. I think Disney is trying to appeal to many different pallets by not being too overpowering. We also got a chocolate dipping sauce to go with it and I would recommend doing that. The mint chocolate flavour screams of the holidays and put us in the holiday spirit.

Rice Krispie Treats are a Disney staple. They are also divisive. Some people will not pay for them and do not think they are particularly special. Whilst others do not consider themselves on a Disney trip until they have bitten into one. Personally I love them and they really do contribute to my visit to Disney World. I will always bring some home to extend the magic a little, this is one way you can use your snack credits. This time we tried the Santa Treat that was made for the season as well as a favourite the chocolate candy covered Krispie treat. Both were excellent. Rice Krispies stuck together with butter and marshmallow then decorated often with chocolate. What is not to love? The Santa treat was very cute with a marshmallow pompom and red sugar. The chocolate candy add crunch and extra chocolate and if you only get 1 get this one. Do share it though definitely share this is very sweet but so, so good.

Keeping to the festive theme we attacked a Santa Joffrey’s Doughnut. Now I love Joffrey’s Coffee and this was actually a breakfast for us. We visited Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park and went on the hunt for breakfast. There were huge queues everywhere and so we went to the exit of Tower of Terror. Here you can find a Joffrey’s Coffee stand and so morning coffee was got along with this doughnut. This was pillowy and sweet with a mini doughnut nose. The mini doughnut was not as good as the main doughnut. It was dry and more cake like. The large doughnut though was brilliant, huge and very sweet. We had to share this and the glaze was very sweet. Would I get it again? Probably not – if someone gave me one for free would I eat it? Of course! If you wanted to you could use your snack credits on one of these giant doughnuts.

Now this treat you can find in two different parks, Disney’s Animal Kingdom or Magic Kingdom. It is available at both Starbuck locations, so Creature Comforts and Main Street Bakery. But also from Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery near Kilimanjaro Safaris in Animal Kingdom. This is the Colossal Cinnamon Roll. I absolutely love this and consider it to be one of the best Walt Disney World Snacks. I share this with my partner for breakfast and I look forward to it every trip. This is snack credit eligible and a great use of your credit. Don’t be fooled by the dark colour it isn’t over toasted it is packed with extra cinnamon, drizzled with icing and caramel and served warm! This is squidgy, soft and truly fantastic – can you tell I liked it?

Sticking in Animal Kingdom we move to ice cream and the Anandapur Ice Cream Truck. This park is often described as the warmest park, and so ice cream is very welcome. This was a Christmas offering the peppermint soft-serve cone. This was green coloured, mint flavoured creamy soft serve ice cream, served in a waffle cone with sprinkles in the shape of candy canes. This was delicious and the mint flavour made it more refreshing. I would eat this again and again. I really enjoyed it. The sprinkles were not flavoured but did add a welcome crunch. I will say if you buy this eat it quick. In the Florida heat – even in December this melted very quickly. But I do wish it was on the menu year round. You can use your snack credits to get soft serve here.

You were warned that there was a festive theme and believe me there is. This is the Mickey gingerbread cookie. This could be found at a few different treat counters across Walt Disney World. We picked ours up from the BoardWalk Bakery. This little man was very tasty. This was a wonderfully soft ginger bread cookie and the chocolate dipped ears added a different note that I loved. The flavour of gingerbread is one of those flavours that instantly rings of festive cheer. If you wanted to get this outside of the holiday season, you can. He can be found in many of the bakery cases around Disney World only he will have white buttons rather than the festive red and green. He can be yours for a snack credit if you wish.

Another snack you can get year round is the covered apples. They are either what they call candy apples or chocolate caramel covered apples. We had the caramel and chocolate covered apple, this has become one of our must-haves. If you only manage to try one of the classic Walt Disney World Snacks you need to consider this. Fresh apple with just enough tart-ness to stand up to the sweet Caramel and the Smooth Milk Chocolate makes a fabulous team. Again as with almost all of these ‘snacks’ I’m going to suggest you share. I am also going to say eat it sliced, this makes it much more manageable. You can actually get it sliced when you buy it at many of the locations, if you want to eat it right away. The one we bought was a festive Minnie mouse inspired apple. Covered in red sugar green m&m’s marshmallow ears and a bow with Santa hat.

If you are looking for good ice cream in Disney World you do have a couple of options. However if Ample Hills Creamery is not at the top of your list then you have the wrong list. Ample Hills Creamy can be found on the Boardwalk. We visited more than once! That is how good this ice cream is. The flavours are brilliant and there are some really fun ones in there. I loved Cookie au Lait, The Munchies and Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. So Ooey Gooey Butter Cake is the creamiest of vanilla ice creams with homemade St. Louis style Butter Cake and is so divinely sweet and creamy. Cookie au Lait is a rich coffe ice cream studded throughout with pieces of Oreo a winning combination if ever I heard one. My ultimate favourite might be The Munchies though get ready because this is a packed ingredient list. Pretzel infused ice cream full to bursting with the munchies mix of Ritz crackers, potato chips, pretzels and crushed M&M’s. The balance of salty and sweet was perfect and right now I am wishing I had some. I got two scoops in a waffle bowl, then you can choose any toppings I chose caramel sauce and goodness me this was good. Eat it on the boardwalk watching the world go by, you may have to defend it from the odd seagull or jealous guest. Do squeeze in a visit to Ample Hills Creamery – you can thank me later.

This next treat is another must-have and they are hidden away and require a little effort to get to. I can assure you they are worth it though. Make you way over to Port Orleans French Quarter and pay a visit to Scat Cats Café. This is the home of the Mickey Beignets. These soft clouds of fried dough that are heaped in icing sugar are what dreams are made of. It is a good job they involve a special trip as I would eat these all day every day. This time we had three of the original Mickey beignets that you can also grab for a snack credit. We also picked up a raspberry beignet, this title may be slightly deceiving as the dough is actually the same dough as the plain beignets. The flavour comes from the raspberry drizzle. This is a faintly flavoured drizzle you do have to search a little for the flavour. The Mickey sprinkles on top add a texture but I didn’t enjoy what they brought to the party. Personally I would not get this again, Id get the powdered sugar version every time – do that it also works our cheaper. If you were to buy 3 of the ‘flavoured’ beignets you would be spending almost the same as buying 6 original Mickey beignets (in fact the difference is 2 cents!). On the spectrum of Walt Disney World Snacks this for me is so close to the pinnacle.

Now we are back on ice cream. It’s Florida, it’s hot, and ice cream is practically an essential. This was a festive special offering from Storybook Treats, the gingerbread soft-serve sundae. This was as the name suggests gingerbread flavoured soft-serve; it came with squirty cream, gingerbread cookie pieces and an extremely cute Minnie Mouse waffle topper. This was really tasty and the crunchy biscuit pieces added a much needed texture change. The waffle topper was sweet and has a great flavour. The soft-serve itself had a good amount of spice to it and left you in no doubt about what flavour it was. Perfect holiday food for the Florida sun.

The final section of this Walt Disney World Snacks post is the snacks we tried whilst attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. This is a separately ticketed event in the Magic Kingdom. Included in the price of your ticket are a selection of free treats and drinks. Drinks you can get are hot chocolate, apple cider (for UK reader this is apple juice) Fanta and eggnog. The complimentary treats are a salted pretzel snowman, this treat I really enjoyed as a welcome savoury snack. The pretzel was satisfyingly chewy and I liked the flavour. My fiancée on the other hand did not enjoy hers, lucky for me!
Sweet treats you could get chocolate chip cookie, peppermint cookie, ginger molasses cookie, snickerdoodle cookie and holiday welcome cookie (this was a sugar cookie shaped as Minnie Mouse’s Face). The cookies were fine. What I will say some where definitely more fine than others but none were outstanding. For me, I did taste them all and I did not have more than one of any of them. I have ranked them from most fine to not for me.
Welcome Cookie
Chocolate Chip Cookie
Ginger Molasses Cookie
Snickerdoodle Cookie
Peppermint Cookie
Let me know if you agree with this order if you went to a Christmas Party.

The final snack was an exclusive snack that was only available during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. At Gaston’s tavern in New Fantasyland we grabbed ourselves Gaston’s Cheese Dip, this was a beer cheese dip served with breadstick antlers. Now this certainly seems like something Gaston would eat. The idea was really great and the look certainly made a good picture. However I was not blown away with this snack. The cheese dip was cold and the breadsticks were very dry. I really wanted to like this snack, I do love the idea I just want the execution to be better. I wouldn’t recommend this snack unless they make some serious changes to it. Such a shame as it was party exclusive so I wanted it to be special. The one thing you can be certain of when eating in Walt Disney World every one will have a different experience. One party this may be fantastic another it may miss the mark, maybe we just got a dud batch.

Walt Disney World Snacks

Hope you enjoyed seeing what Walt Disney World Snacks we tackled and of course there’s so many more that we didn’t get chance to, this time. As we went during the Holiday season we wanted to focus on things that we couldn’t get year round. I’m sure you can tell. If you are going for the holiday season I hope this has whet your appetite. You can check out the snacks I ate in June of 2019 to see some other options.
